Acre's
of Clams ph: 206.624.6852 1001 Alaskan Way - Seattle Although he's passed on to the great clambake in the sky, prominent restauranteur and Fourth of July fireworks provider Ivar Haaglund's legacy lives on. Ivar's Acres of Clams began as a fish and chips stand (which is still there) and has expanded to a waterfront seafood restaurant that seats 400. Recently one of Seattle's top chefs, Barbara Figueroa, was brought on board to work her special magic. The revamped menu includes such dishes as hazelnut pepper crusted albacore tuna with rhubarb chutney cream and Washington salmon with a Thai peanut sauce. Old favorites like the King crab platter and the two pound mound of clams with drawn butter are still very much in evidence, as well. Currently under new ownership, the 14 Carrot continues to offer the same great breakfasts. They're usually packed on weekends, so call ahead to put your name on the list. Breakfast specials like biscuits in gravy and the pancake du jour tend to sell out quickly, and the other offerings are consistently good. Choose from a variety of egg dishes, from the eclectic to the familiar, or try the ever-popular Tahitian French toast, made with tahini. Fish Bar ph: 206.831.5584 2201 Alaskan Way - Seattle This is a big, sprawling waterfront affair at The Bell Street Pier. Dinner is served in Anthony's classy, handsomely appointed upstairs dining room with Koa wood-accents. The Dungeness crab cakes are a favorite and the Potlatch appetizer with its array of Northwest seafood comes highly recommended. Downstairs, the Bell Street Diner serves lunch and dinner in a more casual, but equally delicious setting. The fish tacos and shrimp quesadilla are very popular, as is the Fisherman's catch. Tourists and locals alike line up on weekends and all summer long for the best view in the Market with friendly down home service thrown in. The telephone book size menu covers the usual family fare with some Greek and seafood dishes thrown in -- all at very moderate prices. During off peak hours the hipsters, tourists and old timers coexist amidst the stools, classic wood booths and hodgepodge decor culled from various decades.
