The
Venue
Walk into Safeco, and it's like you're walking into an
old-fashioned baseball stadium. It starts with the metal
sculptures--ballplayers striking classic poses--that adorn
exterior fences. It continues with a red-brick facade. Once
inside, however, you're in for a real treat: The park is
intimate, sightlines are fabulous. Especially pleasing is
being able to enter onto Level 1 and circle the field--without
ever losing sight of the game.
The Experience
Baseball as it was meant to be played. Real grass. Real sky.
The smells of hot dogs and popcorn wafting about. Sit behind
home plate but you'll still feel close to the folks in the
outfield bleacher seats. Sit along first base and you'll get a
great view of downtown. Rain? Don't worry about it. The
state-of-the-art roof is quickly closed (takes about 15
minutes to fully cover the stadium). |

potlatch. In 1927 the Civic Auditorium was built, the
first of the buildings that make up Seattle Center
today. |

The
History
The 6-year old venue, which spends its winters
as home to the Western Hockey League's Spokane
Chiefs, has drawn the praise of sports fans
and concertgoers alike for its accessibility
and subtle charm.
The Big Dance
On March 24 and 26, the arena will host the
Women's West Regional portion of the bracket,
giving eastern Washington two Sweet Sixteen
games and the West Regional Final game.
You Should Know
Spokane is a basketball-crazed city that
reveres native son John Stockton in the same
key that French Lick, Ind., sings the praises
of Larry Bird. The Gonzaga men's squad (which
plays at nearby Martin Centre) has further
excited fans with its recent NCAA appearances. |
